The following Indian Motorcycles are equipped with rear cylinder deactivation:
- Model year 2019 and newer Chief, Indian Vintage, Indian Springfield, Chieftain and Roadmaster
- Model year 2022 and newer FTR models
- All Challenger models
- Indian Pursuit
Rear cylinder deactivation was designed as an aid to reduce engine and exhaust heat to the rider. Rear cylinder deactivation turns off the rear cylinder when the engine gets hot and the bike is stopped. This provides enhanced comfort in slow-moving traffic and warm-weather conditions.
For rear cylinder deactivation to be enabled on cruiser, bagger and touring models, the following conditions must be met:
- The engine must be up to operating temperature.
- The ambient temperature must exceed 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 C).
- The engine speed must remain below 1,000 RPM.
- The gear position must be 1, 2 or N.
- The throttle must be in the closed position (0 percent throttle).
Rear cylinder deactivation conditions for Indian Pursuit:
- Engine must be up to operating temperature.
- Ambient Temperature must exceed 59 °F (15 °C).
- Engine speed must remain below 1000 rpm.
- Throttle must be in the closed position (0% throttle)
- Exhaust catalyst temperature must be sufficiently high for tailpipe emissions compliance.
The rear cylinder will reactivate when throttle is applied.
For Indian Motorcycle models equipped with RIDE COMMAND, rear cylinder deactivation can be turned off by accessing the settings menu in the drop-down from the top of the screen. Cylinder deactivation controls are in the Vehicle menu. When rear cylinder deactivation is functioning, an icon will illuminate at the top of the display.
For models not equipped with RIDE COMMAND, do the following to disable rear cylinder deactivation:
1. Press the right-hand trigger until "CYLdeAC" displays.
2. Hold down the right-hand trigger. "CD ON" or "CD OFF" will display.
3. Toggle to turn Cylinder Deactivation on or off. Press and hold the right-hand trigger to save the settings.
- CYLdeAC ON: Rear cylinder can deactivate
- CYLdeAC OFF: Rear cylinder cannot deactivate
Model Year 2022 and Newer FTR
Model year 2022 and newer FTR models include rear cylinder deactivation to shut down the rear cylinder when the engine is at operating temperature and at idle speed.
For rear cylinder deactivation to be enabled on FTR, the following conditions must be met:
- Engine coolant temperature must be above 176 degrees Fahrenheit (80 degrees Celsius).
- Ambient temperature must exceed 59 F (15 C).
- Engine speed must be below 2,200 RPM.
- Throttle must be in the closed position (0 percent throttle).
For FTR models equipped with RIDE COMMAND, rear cylinder deactivation can be turned on and off by accessing the settings menu. Cylinder deactivation controls can be found in the Vehicle Settings menu. When rear cylinder deactivation is functioning, an icon will illuminate at the right of the display.
For models not equipped with RIDE COMMAND, perform the following procedure to enable or disable rear cylinder deactivation:
1. Navigate to the ambient air temperature display mode on the Multi-Function Display (MFD).
2. Long press the right-hand trigger until "CYLdeAC" displays.
3. Pressing the right-hand trigger will allow the operator to toggle between "CD ON" and "CD OFF."
4. Press and hold the right-hand trigger to save the settings.
- CYLdeAC ON: Rear cylinder can deactivate.
- CYLdeAC OFF: Rear cylinder cannot deactivate.
When the cylinder deactivation features activates and the cylinder is deactivated, a "CylDeAC" message is shown on the MFD for 1 second. When the feature deactivates and the cylinder activates, a "CylAC" message is shown on the MFD for 1 second.
