Required Tools and Supplies:
- 6mm Allen Socket
- 2.5-Inch Oil Filter Wrench
- Ratchet
- Torque Wrench
- Oil Pan
- Funnel
- Shop Rags

- Nitrile Gloves
- 20W-40 Semi-Synthetic Engine Oil
Always wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves when servicing your Indian Motorcycle. To change the engine oil and filter on your model year 2022 and newer Indian Chief, Chief Dark Horse, Chief Bobber, Chief Bobber Dark Horse, Super Chief or Super Chief Limited, follow these steps:
1. Park the bike on a flat, level surface.
2. Start the engine, and allow it to warm up at idle for 5 minutes.
3. Stop the engine.
4. Clean the area around the oil dipstick.
5. Remove the dipstick and set aside.
6. Place a drain pan underneath the engine crankcase. Placing a rag in the bottom of the drain pan will help prevent the splashing of oil.
7. Clean the area around the oil drain plugs.
8. Remove the drain plugs and washers with a 6mm Allen socket, and allow the oil to drain completely.
9. Remove the engine oil filter from underneath the bike at the front of the engine with a 2.5-inch (64 mm) oil filter wrench.
10. Lubricate the O-ring on the new filter with a film of fresh engine oil, and ensure it’s in good condition. The filter is part number 2521421.
11. Using a clean dry cloth, clean the filter sealing surface on the engine.
12. Install the new filter, and rotate it clockwise by hand until the filter gasket contacts the sealing surface. Using the oil filter wrench, turn it an additional three-quarters of a turn.
13. Before continuing, wipe up any residual oil around the filter.
14. Inspect the drain plugs. The sealing surfaces on the plugs and engine should be clean and free of burrs, nicks or scratches.
15. Install a new sealing washer on the drain plugs. The washer is part number 5812232. Reinstall the drain plugs and torque to 15 ft-lbs (20 Nm).
16. Before continuing, wipe up any residual oil on the bike.
17. Begin by adding 4.5 quarts (4.25 liters) of the recommended oil. A quart of Indian Motorcycle Semi-Synthetic 20W40 Motor Oil is part number 2880012.
18. Reinstall the dipstick securely and wipe up any residual oil.
19. With the motorcycle in an upright and centered position, start the engine and idle for approximately 30 seconds.
20. Stop the engine, and inspect for leaks.
21. Remove the dipstick again and add the additional 1 to 1.5 quarts (0.95 to 1.42 liters) of the recommended oil. Do not overfill.
22. Reinstall the dipstick fully and wipe up any residual oil.
23. Start the engine and allow it to idle for 30 seconds to begin the final oil level check.
24. Stop the engine.
25. With the aid of an assistant, stand the bike upright.
26. Remove the dipstick and wipe with a clean shop towel.
27. Reinstall the dipstick fully and remove again to inspect the oil level. Ensure the oil level is within the safe operating range.
28. Once confirmed, reinstall the dipstick securely. Note: After an oil change, the low oil pressure indicator may illuminate when the engine is started. If this occurs, do not increase the RPM above idle speed until the indicator turns off.
Oil Life Reset
On models with a touchscreen display and RIDE COMMAND:
1. Navigate to the SETTINGS menu on your bike. Choose VEHICLE SETTINGS (farthest right) > OIL LIFE / SERVICE.
2. Select RESET, and confirm your selection.
3. Dispose of the used oil and filter properly at your local recycling facility.
