Note: Indian Roadmaster PowerPlus Dark Horse w/PowerBand Audio model shown. This procedure is applicable to Indian Challenger, Pursuit and Chieftain PowerPlus.
To remove and replace the battery on your Indian Roadmaster PowerPlus, follow these steps:
1. Park the motorcycle on a flat surface, fully extend the side stand and ensure the vehicle is stable.
2. Turn the key or ignition switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If equipped with a keyless fob, remove the fob from the proximity of the vehicle.
3. Remove the two chin fairing fasteners with a 6mm Hex Bit socket.
4. Remove the chin fairing.
5. Using a 6mm Hex Bit socket, remove the battery bracket by removing its fastener and sliding the bracket out of its retention feature.
6. Disconnect the negative battery cable first with a 10mm socket to prevent arcing. Caution: Be careful not to cross battery terminals. Tip: Reinstalling the fasteners into the posts will help prevent misplacement.
7. Remove the positive cable protector boot from the positive battery cable with a 10mm socket and disconnect the cable from the terminal.
8. Remove the battery from the battery box. Tip: Pushing up from underneath the bracket will help guide the battery out.
9. If reinstalling the battery, ensure it is fully charged and free of any debris or damage. Be sure the cable ends and battery terminals are clean. Follow the instructions in the Battery Charging section of your Owner's Manual before installing the battery.
10. Carefully install the battery into the battery box while lifting up from underneath the bracket to help guide it into place.
11. Connect the positive battery terminal first to prevent arcing and torque the fastener to 48 in-lbs (5.4 Nm).
12. Connect the negative battery terminal and torque the fastener to 48 in-lbs (5.4 Nm).
13. Apply a light film of dielectric grease to both terminal areas for corrosion protection.
14. Verify the cables are secure and properly routed. Tip: Turn the bike ON to verify the battery has been connected properly.
15. Install the battery bracket, ensuring the retention tab is fully engaged.
16. Install the bracket fastener and torque to 84 in-lbs (10 Nm).
17. Reinstall the chin fairing, ensuring the tabs are aligned on the bottom.
17. Reinstall the fasteners and torque to 36 in-lbs (4 Nm).
