Always wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves when servicing your Indian Motorcycle. To remove and replace the battery on your model year 2022 and newer Indian Chief, Chief Dark Horse, Chief Bobber, Chief Bobber Dark Horse, Super Chief or Super Chief Limited, follow these steps:
1. Park the motorcycle on a flat, level surface, and ensure the bike is powered off.
2. If needed, remove the seat removal tool next to the battery charging port behind the engine.
3. Push the tool in, rotate down, and pull out to remove.
4. If a passenger seat is equipped, loosen the rear seat fastener with a 6mm Allen socket.
5. Lift the rear of the seat and pull upward to disengage the seat grommet from the passenger seat post.
6. Continue to pull up on the seat until the grab strap is pulled completely through the seat.
7. Remove the passenger seat post from the front seat bracket with a 6mm Allen socket. Lift the rear of the seat and pull rearward to disengage the seat from the front frame mount.
8. With a 10mm socket, remove the negative battery cable first to prevent arcing. Position the cable well clear of the terminal. Reinstalling the fastener into the battery post will help prevent misplacement.
9. Disconnect both connectors in the upper battery tray, and release the harness from the upper battery tray retainers.
10. Disconnect the rubber strap securing the upper battery tray, and pull it toward the rear to remove.
11. Continue by removing the fastener from the battery bracket with a 6mm Allen socket.
12. Push the other end of the bracket forward and out of its retention point with a prying tool. Once cleared, pull up and out to remove.
13. Push the battery forward to prevent paint scratching. Remove the positive cable fastener with a 10mm socket, and set the cable aside.
14. Continue by lifting the battery straight up and out of the battery box.
15. Inspect the battery box and cover for any wear or damage, and replace if needed.
16. If reinstalling the battery, ensure it is fully charged and free of any debris or damage. Follow the instructions in the Battery Charging section of your Owner’s Manual before installing the battery.
17. Before continuing, clean the battery box, using a clean, dry shop towel.
18. Carefully position the battery into the battery box with the negative terminal on the left side of the bike.
19. Reinstall the positive cable first to prevent arcing. Torque to 45 in-lbs (5 Nm).
20. Reinstall the battery strap, and reengage its lower retention point.
21. Reinstall the fastener. Torque the fastener to 84 in-lbs (9.5 Nm).
22. Apply a light film of dielectric grease or petroleum jelly to the positive terminal, and verify it is connected securely.
23. Engage the two front mounting points on the upper battery tray, and reinstall the rubber strap to secure.
24. Continue by reconnecting the two connectors to the upper battery tray and securing their harnesses.
25. Reinstall the negative cable. Torque to 45 in-lbs (5 Nm).
26. Apply a light film of dielectric grease or petroleum jelly to the negative terminal.
27. Verify the negative cable is secure and properly routed.
28. Before continuing, turn the bike ON to verify the battery has been connected properly.
29. Reinstall the seat by inserting the front mounting tabs into the frame and aligning the mounting hole.
30. Thread the seat mount fastener through the seat bracket and into the fender. Torque the seat fastener to 13 ft-lbs (18 Nm) with a 6mm Allen socket.
31. If equipped, position the passenger seat near the fender, and push the grab strap through the seat bottom.
32. Lower the passenger seat onto the seat post, and push downward to engage the seat grommet.
33. Tighten the rear seat fastener. Torque to 13 ft-lbs (18 Nm) with a 6mm Allen socket.
34. If used, reinsert the seat removal tool, rotate up, and pull back to lock the tool in place.
